Each year, eight beautiful girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king. It’s the highest honor they could hope for…and the most demeaning. This year, there’s a ninth. And instead of paper, she’s made of fire.

In this richly developed fantasy, Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara. She lives in a remote village with her father, where the decade-old trauma of watching her mother snatched by royal guards for an unknown fate still haunts her. Now, the guards are back and this time it’s Lei they’re after — the girl with the golden eyes whose rumored beauty has piqued the king’s interest.

Over weeks of training in the opulent but oppressive palace, Lei and eight other girls learns the skills and charm that befit a king’s consort. There, she does the unthinkable — she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens her world’s entire way of life. Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide how far she’s willing to go for justice and revenge.

First thing im going to start with in my review is the cover, i mean look how pretty it is… Its one of the the first things that made me want to read this book.

We might be Paper Girls, easily torn and written upon. The very title we’re given suggests that we are blank, waiting to be filled. But what the Demon King and his court do not understand is that paper is flammable. And there is a fire catching among us.

I never expected to love Girls of paper and fire, its such a hyped book with so many great reviews i was left thinking is this really for me? Well now i can answer this, yes it was for me i fully enjoyed this book.

I really enjoyed lei’s character, shes such a good heroine, i love how she was allowed to be terrified and desperate for escape and unsure if shes strong enough to actually fight and also that she tried to help the other paper girls throughout the story and be there for them. I also loved Wrens character, she is such a good love interest, shes supportive and caring but has her own shit to deal with. I also loved several side characters – Blue and Aiko are both excellent, and I can’t wait to see more out of them.

I really enjoyed the romance, it was so delightfully angsty

“No one’s paying attention to us, their focus all on the stage, and I need her right now, need the familiar warmth of her hands to ground me, to calm my already frantic heart from spiraling so far out of control that it breaks free – and me with it”

The story is told from lei’s pov, i loved the authors writing style and how she described everything, the dresses the paper girls wore , the palace and even the characters in the book… I think i loved the authors writing style, i found the story easy to follow and when the author decribed the characters, palace, the different towns i found myself picturing them on how the author described them.

Overall i absolutely loved this story and i cant wait for the next book in November.

I know ive put quotes in my review but here are some others that i enjoyed.

I don’t want an easy life. I want a meaningful one.

Her kisses heal the parts of me that the King broke. They tell me: You are strong, Lei. You are beautiful. You are mine. And, always, most important: You are yours.
